Stanbury

A Pennine Country Village

By Dennis Thompson

Stanbury is not as well known as its neighbour Haworth, with its Brontė connections, but the author has discovered many interesting facets of the history of the village.

The lifestyle of this ancient village developed through the years from a farming fraternity coupled with a cottage industry in spinning and hand loom weaving to a prolific industry with its textile mills, coal mines and quarries. Today these have all disappeared but the surrounding moors are a tourist attraction, as part of the long distance walk 'The Pennine Way' passes through Top Withens Farm (Wuthering Heights) and Ponden Hall with their Brontė interests.
